Tomatoes are one of Togo’s biggest market-garden crops, grown mainly in the Savanes region and in the irrigated gardens around Lomé. We focus on the three types that sell well on both sides of the Atlantic:
- Roma (plum), about 60 g (Roma VF, Tropimech): thick flesh, few seeds, the tomato for sauces and canning.
- Round, about 90 g (Mongal F1, TYLCV-15): the everyday slicing tomato for salads and retail.
- Beefsteak (ribbed), about 180 g (local “tomate du pays”): meaty and full of flavour, flown in fresh.
Roma and round tomatoes travel by refrigerated container at 12–15 °C, ripening on the way; beefsteak tomatoes go by air. Each type is sold by the basket (20 kg), crate (50 kg) or pallet (200 kg). Every lot is traceable to the farm.
